Asian American Population in the United States: 2020

In 2020, more than 24 million Asian Americans resided in the United States, comprising 7% of the nation’s total population.
Hawaii has the highest concentration of Asian Americans — 57% of its population is Asian American. Asian Americans also represent the largest racial group in the state. The largest Asian ethnic groups in Hawaii include Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese Americans.

California has the largest Asian American population in the United States, with over 7 million Asian Americans. California’s Asian American population represents about 29% of the total Asian American population nationwide. It ranks second in the percentage of Asian American population, following Hawaii. The top three counties with largest Asian American populations are all located in California: Los Angeles County (1,697,762), Santa Clara County (819,560) and Orange County (792,539). Non-Taiwanese Chinese, Filippino, Asian Indian, Vietnamese and Korean Americans are the largest Asian ethnic groups in California.

ASIAN AMERICAN POPULATION GROWTH
Asian Americans are among the fastest growing racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Over the past decade, the Asian American population increased by 39%, while White population fell by 3%.
Asian American communities expanded rapidly in southern and midwestern states. North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska experienced the fastest growth in Asian populations between 2010 and 2020, with increases of 103%, 81%, and 70%, respectively.
